June 20-July 4, 2008: Glass installation by Harue Shimomoto, Design Gallery, School of Human Ecology, 1300 Linden Drive. Harue Shimomoto manipulates glass into sculptural tapestries, examining the aesthetic possibilities in fusing methods and concepts from the mediums of glass and fiber. For this installation at the Design Gallery, her work moves beyond the wall to create pathways through a complex network of glass rods, transforming the gallery's space into a meditative journey. Shimomoto is a MFA candidate in the UW-Madison’s Department of Art, and her faculty advisor is Professor Diane Sheehan of the Department of Design Studies at the School of Human Ecology. Shimomoto received her BFA from Tokyo's Mushashino Art University in 1995, and has also studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her work is supported in part by Habatat Gallery, Boca Raton, Florida. Free and open to the public. Visit www.designgallery.wisc.edu for more information.

September 3-28, 2008: Maura Schaffer, "Bon Appetit," Design Gallery, School of Human Ecology, 1300 Linden Drive. Maura Schaffer’s multi-media sculpture and installation work uses the familiar trappings of domestic life to convey aspects of the human condition.  For several years her work has focused on the dinner table as a means of expressing ideas about relationships. Made with fabric and wire, her anthropomorphic, gestural chairs, tables, windows and doors dance, argue, make love, and share angst-ridden meals in poetic and often painfully funny tableaux. Schaffer’s work has been widely shown in solo and group shows and has won several awards. She received the Indiana Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Program Grant in 2004 and 2006. Free and open to the public. Visit www.designgallery.wisc.edu for more information.

September 12-13, 2008: "The Culture of Print in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine" Conference, UW-Madison. Preliminary program, registration, and accommodation information is posted at the web site of the Center for the History of Print Culture in Modern America: http://slisweb.lis.wisc.edu/~printcul/
