Additional Campus Events:

September 8 - November 20: “Movin’ On Up: The Changing Face of the School of Human Ecology,” Design Gallery, 1300 Linden Drive. Reception on Friday, October 2, 4-7 p.m. Construction on the University of Wisconsin’s School of Human Ecology building addition will begin in January, so this fall will be our last semester in the current Design Gallery space. This exhibit will present the architects’ models and drawings, landscaping plans, and interior design details for the addition and the renovation of our 1914 building, and offer a road map for the transition period. The exhibit will allow a better and more complete appreciation of the project’s scope and intent, which has so far been presented primarily via Powerpoint talks in overcrowded meeting rooms. It will also detail plans for the renovation of the 1915 building, highlight historic photos of the School’s early years, and present a brief overview of past Design Gallery exhibitions. In addition, a significant portion of the gallery will be set aside for class critiques, portfolio reviews, and temporary installations of student work, to be reserved on a rotating basis. This will serve as a kind of trial run for the planned Student Gallery in the new building, and relieve the pressure on classrooms during the hectic fall transition. With extended open hours, we hope that this exhibition will become an informal gathering place where the SoHE community can celebrate and anticipate the exciting changes to come, and the public can readily visualize our future. During the construction and renovation period, the Design Gallery will maintain a presence in alternative spaces throughout the UW campus and the city. “Stitched Ground: Artists Embroider the Land,” an exhibition curated by Design Gallery director Jody Clowes, will be on view at the Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters from February through April, 2010. Our annual juried student show will be integrated into the Department of Design Studies’s fashion show at Monona Terrace in early May. Visit our website to find out where we’ll be next!

September 15 - November 21: "Images of the Ho-Chunk," Exhibition by Tom Jones, Assistant Professor of Photography. Wisconsin Historical Museum, 30 North Carroll Street on the Capitol Square. Examine 150 years of the Ho-Chunk people as documented through the lens of a camera. This exhibit features 1860's photographs by James F. Bodtker, turn of the century images by Charles Van Schaick, and recent images by Ho-Chunk photographer Tom Jones. Ho-Chunk jewelry, ribbon work, and other objects from Wisconsin Historical Museum collections complement the images.

November 19-20: MATHBIO2: IMAGE, Interdisciplinary Bioimage Informatics. Second Annual University of Wisconsin-Madison Symposium on Integration of Mathematical & Biological Sciences. Fluno Center. The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery and the UW Graduate School are sponsoring the Second Annual MathBio Symposium for University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty and staff to explore the interfaces that connect the mathematical, computational and biological sciences. The 2009 MathBio symposium, titled MathBio 2: IMAGE, will focus on the mathematical, computational and perceptual challenges and opportunities in the exploding field of biological imaging. Presenters will highlight the growing need for interdisciplinary collaborative efforts to more effectively understand, analyze, visualize and disseminate biological image data sets. The multidisciplinary nature of image analysis, particularly the science of perception and visualization, will be discussed in partnership with faculty from diverse areas across campus. For more information, registration, and a full schedule of events, visit www.WiscMathBio.org.
