Seminar: Cross-Cultural Aesthetics
Art Ed 951/Art 908

Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that deals with questions of taste,
or in a broader sense, the study of the conditions of sensuous perception.
This course is a cross-cultural exploration of standards and criteria for
judging quality in artistic productions for purposes of developing
intercultural literacy. Students will attain a broad theoretical foundation
in comparative aesthetics based on readings from anthropology, art history,
philosophy, and art education.

Objectives
Students will:
Acquire a working understanding of theoretical principals of aestheticsfrom Africa, the West, Oceania, and other world regions.
Gain skills in active thinking and discussing art using a variety of
perspectives and criteria.
Develop instructional materials and/or art works based on cultural
aesthetics.
