How can artists and designers influence the character of public space?  How can we engage the built and natural environment  to turn “space” into “place”… help a community identify itself… act as artist/citizens in the larger public realm?  This seminar will consider many aspects of public art, from permanent site works to temporary interventions to utilitarian forms. We will address issues of placemaking, relationships to architecture and the natural environment,  definitions of “the public” and consensus, commemoration, collaboration, ecological concerns, methods of research, and professional opportunities. Class slide lectures, readings, discussion, visiting speakers and field trips will be the bulk of the class.

Requirements:
Students will be required to complete one modest public art project and one fully-developed proposal for a public project of their choice. You are also expected to come to class and participate in all activities and discussions.
