Italian Renaissance Art: 1240-1400

AH 321

This course focuses on the painting, sculpture and architecture created on the Italian peninsula between 1250 and 1400. The three primary media of architecture, sculpture and painting will be studied within a broad historical and cultural context. The primary issues directing the class will be an examination of artistic style, art patronage, the relationship between art and theology, and the artist's degree of self-consciousness. Major artists include Giotto, Duccio, the Pisani, Simone Martini, and Altichiero. P: So. standing or consent of instructor.
