Irit Rogoff Guest Lecture
"Of Fear, Of Contact, Of Entanglement"

Monday, September 13
5:30pm, Elvehjem L140

Abstract: Borders and boundaries have long stabilised every form of location from the nation state to scholarly disciplines. The old logics of borders and boundaries and everything they have sustained have of late been eroded through various means; Derridian notions of the limits of the possible, Anthropological notions of 'contact zones', the 'ambient fear' which has accompanied the activities of international terror, emergent understandings of cultural 'creolisation' and notions of the 'multitude' within globalisation. This presentation is an attempt to track these processes of erosion in relation to manifestations within contemporary arts practice. The talk will be preceeded by a screening of Michal Rovner's film "Border".

Irit Rogoff Workshop
"Looking Away-Participating Singularities"

Readings

This will be a presentation of some work in progress which is attempting to ask "What does it mean to take part in culture beyond the roles allotted to us as audience, viewers, listeners, visitors etc"? In thinking of some of the ways in which audiences stage their participation within the spaces of contemporary art, I am also trying to think whether notions of participatory democracy might not have something to learn from the proliferation of performed subjectivities which characterize engagements with art.
