Lecture: THE QUEEN'S SORE THROAT
Tuesday, April 5
Elvehjem L140
5:30pm
Spinning off the work of Wayne Koestenbaum, Douglas Crimp, Linda Scott
and others concerning the queer martyr, the operatic spectacle, and the
rendering of the American and African AIDS crises in song, this lecture
will examine the use of voice and opera in my work and others addressing
AIDS. Clips from films/tapes will include: the agit-prop PSA "The ADS
Epidemic", a safer-sex remake of "Death in Venice;" excerpts from my
AIDS musical 'Zero Patience'; and scenes from my recent
video-installation "Fig Trees", which renders the treatment strike of
South African AIDS activist Zackie Achmat as a new opera by Gertrude
Stein.
Workshop: AGIT-PROP FOR A NEW MILLENIUM
Wednesday, April 6
1-5pm
A seminar on recent innovative video and web-based interventions
against the Bush regime, the Iraq war, homeland security and the new
imperialism. A round-table discussion on the pros and cons of various
representational techniques, from web-satire ('Jib Jab' and 'Girls for
Bush') to Michael Moore/Yes Men-style performance stunts, to collective
projects ("I'm Sorry" website) to modernist duration pieces: 'Motet for
Amplified Voices", "His Instructors Described Him as an Unmotivated
Student", new anti-occupation PSA's by Cynthia Magansky... And more.
