In the postcolonial struggle to rearrange the power equation between dominant global forces and satellite citizens, visual culture remains a formidable theatre of transcendence, transfigurations, and entrancement. This keynote addresses the infinite journey of the global native who, in order to claim a space in the metropolis must first transcend fictions of origin, and then double back and embark on what Aime Cesaire famously called Un Retour Au Pays Natal, the “return to the native land”, to re-dis/cover the self. But because the struggle is never-ending, the presentation concludes by surveying the critical role of visual culture in postcolonial insurgency.
