He Said, She Said: Third Person Theory instigates a discourse between the theorists and practitioners of visual culture to explore how creativity and critical insight serve as practical necessities for both artists and writers. The student curators, visual artist Tara Mathison and visual scholar Beth Zinsli, seek to examine the points at which the actual practices and methods of each discipline intersect and overlap. The experiment begins by pairing a visual artist with a traditional scholar in an intense conversation about a selected theoretical reading that informs the practices of both. The selected readings will provoke, question, reaffirm, and transform the very definition of the critical theory and its role in creative practice. After the conversation, both the artist and the scholar will create a work in their preferred medium that is inspired by both the initial reading and the subsequent conversation. The works created by scholars will be installed alongside the visual artwork of the artists. Aesthetics and theory will be key components in both the artworks and the creative writings made for the show. The ultimate goal for “He Said, She Said” is to illustrate that the divide between artists and visual theorists is not as wide as commonly thought and that both artists and scholars creatively resonate on a multitude of levels.
