Critical Theory and Visual Culture

AH600

The class is a pilot for what will eventually be a 300-level introductory lecture course that provides a beginning survey of critical theory as applied to the study and theorization of visual culture. The course will cover Marxist social theory, psychoanalysis, Frankfurt school
cultural critique, and semiotics and continue through poststructuralism, feminist theory, queer theory, postcolonial theory, and critical race studies. The course reader includes both
primary texts and sample case studies. The requirements include short papers and a midterm and final exam. There are no prerequisites.
